Thought of the Week - Seeing Myself

I have always wanted to feel more comfortable in front of the camera. A photographer once told me that he could tell I wasn't looking at myself much in the mirror. I asked him how he could tell. He said, "You don't know how you look in different poses."  This exchange made me reflect on how I feel about looking at myself, at my body. I started to pose in front of the mirror and really see myself. An interesting exercise. I noticed that when I wear something I love, my body language is so much better! I had the honor to play with some more poses and clothes when Deborah Darling came to visit Alembika in Israel. After many...

Thought of the week - Alembika SS23 Presentation

I was with the Alembika team in Israel and spent a few days reviewing last season's conclusions, planning ahead, talking colors and visions, playing with fabrics, and meeting agents and distributors from around the world.  Nothing is more satisfying than working with people you love and respect! Seeing so much creativity is inspiring. Working with business people who are strong and kind is precious. And, when we work hard doing what we love, it doesn't feel like a job. The Alembika team welcomed everyone in a beautiful hotel on the beach in Tel Aviv, making it a great intro to the vibrant feel of the collections and the warm rusty colors Hagar loves and calls "flames"... And her blues that are like the...

Thought of the Week - Melanie Whaley

Melanie Whaley, the owner of Essential Elements in Chicago, shopeechicago.com, was our guest speaker in Alembika's bi-weekly Zoom Cafe this past friday. Melanie has a unique story as the owner of a successful, high-end boutique in Chicago's inner city. As a woman and an African American, it was inspiring to hear about Melanie's timeline and see how she built her little empire.  Melanie is honest, direct and embraces open conversations about being a black woman in business. What struck me most was her graceful approach to life and the challenges she faces as an African American business woman. She has no anger in her voice when speaking of earlier days, when she did not feel welcome in vendor's booths unless she showed...

Thought of the Week - Plus

We are testing a new Capsule group in Plus size and I invite you all to get a taste of it! Some of the feedback we received from the trunk shows we had with some of you was that the customer was looking for bigger sizes that many of you don't carry regularly or at all. Our sizes 5,6,8 cater to a bigger woman that you should all carry and now we are introducing a new size range : 1X, 2X, 3X that fits women size 16/18 , 18/20, 20/22. This group fits more generously around the bust, waist and arms. There is a reason why plus size departments closed down in the department stores. This woman wants to shop in...
