This short documentary MALAWI, which is part of The City University of New York Film Festival on CUNY TV, is why I love my work so much and shows us why Retail still works so well.
Mimi represents so many of you. People love to be seen and a good retailer does just that.
There is a practice called "Sensing Hands" in Tai chi where we work with another player trying to sense where they are, feeling their center and aim to neutralize and balance each other. There is no competition but we do meet our ego, of course.
When there is an imbalance or a “gap” as we call it, there is a chance to “push".
“0/0” is a win in sensing hands.
To do so, we must ”invest in loss” , our teacher keeps reminding us.
Do you know how to lose?

Yael

It's that time of the year where we see many graduate students in the streets. It makes me think about the many graduations we go through in life. School graduation is only the beginning of so many transitions and teachings.
Leaving home was one big graduation, transitioning into young adulthood.
I remember graduating my younger self at around age 40 (late bloomer) when I suddenly felt grown up, not needing my friends’ or family’s approval which I relied on so much earlier in my life.
Graduating my role as mother as my young kids grew into capable adults going through their life journeys on their own. I recognized the desire and need to transition into a different kind of parent role where I am more of a watcher and less of a decision maker.
We have many graduations in our lives that are worth noticing and celebrating. I want to make sure I recognize them, put the cape on and cheer for myself when I am doing it successfully.I also want to learn from the places where I made mistakes and honor the teaching moments they gifted me.
One of the beautiful things about getting older is that we become women of certainty. Not women of a certain age. Graduating from uncertainty is a very fulfilling and best transition to feel. I am Ok with owning what I know.
What are your most meaningful graduations?
Happy Monday,
Yael

I like my daily routines and tend to get comfortable in my habits. Change is always an effort for me and brings discomfort.
Many of our Alembika ladies still prefer to shop brick and mortar rather than online.

We talk a lot at work about how we come dressed on a daily basis matters. I see a connection between how I dress up in the morning and the way I function during the day. When I pay attention to what I wear and how I look, I find myself paying attention to other things too. To the team as well. I come with a certain intention.
If I didn’t do my hair and makeup that morning, and I didn’t care about how I looked, it would show in my overall attitude towards work. I want to show respect to myself and others by dressing up for my day.
How do you feel about your work team dressing up? Do you require they do?
Happy Monday,
Yael
]]>The NYC subway system can be tricky. It's the best and the worst thing we have in the city. I can be at work in 20 minutes door to door if things go smoothly. Fatima, (our sales manager), comes in from Brooklyn and she has daily stories about how the train stops in between stations and will not move for 15-20 minutes which brings up anxiety within her.
Last week my train home got stuck between 42nd street and 50th. There was a loud sound inside the car and we couldn't hear the conductor. 10 minutes later we were still standing still . I felt the anxiety rising. I got sweaty and uncomfortable in my seat.
It took another 15 minutes before we started to move.
I texted Fatima and asked her what comes to her mind when the train gets stuck. She said : "I feel like I am going to have a heart attack and die in the car with no one able to get to me; I feel trapped".
I was sure that it was a terror attack and that was why we had stopped in between cars. The conductor was probably dead already and the terrorists were on the way to our car next.
I asked the guy next to me what he thought was going on and he calmly said "Oh, it's a mechanical problem. We will be moving soon".
What a great opportunity to notice how our minds work and how we all have different default responses, and how we totally believe and attach to the thoughts and stories in our minds.
What's your immediate response when your train stops? When you are stuck and not in control?
Can we treat our thoughts as clouds that come and go?
Happy Monday.
Yael
